Frequently Asked Questions

Student Questions

Why come to Symposium over another career-related event?

First of all, just because you go to one event doesn’t mean you can’t go to another! However, Symposium offers meaningful ways to connect with companies outside of your typical “career fair” setup. Most other career events are only an hour, and Symposium gives you nearly a day and a half to connect and engage with company representatives. Instead of simply passing out resumes, we create an environment to get to know companies and their values through interactive sessions. Oh, and did we mention lunch is included?

What should I wear to Symposium?

We don’t have a set “dress code,” but think about the setting: you and 450 of your peers meeting about 150 company representatives. You want to look your best! We recommend that students wear a suit (a jacket, collared shirt - with tie or not, slacks or dress skirt), a dress at or below knee length, or other business professional clothing. Make sure your shoes are comfortable! If you’re a pro at wearing heels, feel free. Otherwise, flats could save your feet. We recommend not breaking in a new pair of shoes at Symposium.

What should I bring to Symposium?

Remember that if you bring something, you have to carry it around all day. If you must bring a backpack or bag, we will have limited storage space to place things. Many students bring a padfolio or folder with a few resumes and a pen and notepad to take notes. Otherwise, you don’t need much for the day.

Symposium is all day on a Friday. If I have class, will my absence be excused?

Your professor is the only one who can choose to excuse (or not excuse) your absence from class. We can’t guarantee that your absence won’t count against you. Check your professors’ syllabus for their attendance policy and decide based on that.

How much does it cost to attend Symposium?

Registration costs $10 this year, which covers your free gift at the event.

Company Sponsor Questions

Why come to Symposium over another career-related event?

However, Symposium offers meaningful ways to connect with companies outside of your typical “career fair” setup. Most other career events are only an hour, and Symposium gives companies nearly a day and a half to connect and engage with candidates. We create an environment for students to get to know companies and their values through interactive sessions.

What kinds of students will I interact with at Symposium?

In general, juniors and seniors attend Symposium in the highest numbers. There will be smaller amounts of underclassmen as well. These students span majors at UNC-Chapel Hill, from Business to Computer Science and many other fields of interest. These students are thinkers, doers, and world-changers, and they are eager to meet your company.
